BC ESL School Scams continue without Regulations

I was hoping that life would be better in BC - but that will not happen.

The notorious international school scam artists that are defrauding thousands of international students and providing Canada with the worst international criminal reputation will be allowed to continue.

BC's Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell had the opportunity to create
mandatory quality-assurance programs and the re-regulation of English as a Second Language (ESL) schools and he failed to deliver anything of value.

Of course the BC politicians are using excuses - it will be difficult to write regulations - it creates competitive dis-advantages for the ESL schools - we need more inspectors - there are only a few bad apples in the industry.

What the BC politicians are not telling the BC voters is that the illegal ESL school operators are acting as visa mills for illegal workers. By the way have you ever heard of the sex trade or human trafficing. There are rumours that some are selling fake Canadian University degrees and some are fronts for money laundering. We get complaints about the small petty criminals that just do not pay their Canadian teachers, their Canadian homestay fees, do not pay Canadian taxes etc. etc..

What is even worse is that many students have their registration and tuition money stolen before they even get to Canada. Many students that get to Canada and are ripped off do not complain because they do not speak English, are afraid of the police and they have been threatened by the criminals.

The BC politicians know that the international ESL student complaints are like the iceberg with 95% of them hidden and never seen. It really looks like the BC politicians have done nothing to help the international ESL students because they are not BC voters and after they had their money stolen they do not have money. When have you ever seen a BC politician help someone that is not a voter and has no money?

Introducing the How 2 Retire Early Blog

How 2 retire Early

The How 2 Retire Early blog will provide the results of our life experiences, work explorations and discoveries, compare and contrast our investment results, provide saving tips, retirement comments, opinions, observations and useful suggestions.

The Welcome Letter:

Early retirement is a hot button for the vast majority of working adults.

The concept of not working is pure fantasy for working adults slugging out a salary in the harsh pits of employment. Working with stress, demeaning behaviours, unhealthy dangerous or physically punishing jobs will motivate all sane people to try to leave early.

For those who love their job, get up early and work late, are constantly rewarded and appreciated for their contributions and efforts, the concept of early retirement never enters their thinking.

Standard saving and planning for early retirement as promoted by the banks, insurance companies, investment managers, pension trustees and retirement planners all seems to be the same. You do without part of your money for forty years and trust that there is something left for you at age 55, 60 or 65. (Just ask the retirees who had to get their money in 1978, 1987, 2001, or 2008 what they think)

Just ask many who are retiring early what they will do? Their answers will surprise you. Usually they are even more busy than when they are working. Early retirement is just a job change for these individuals.

To me renovating the house, building a cottage, putting in a greenhouse garden, completing a university degree or writing a book is starting a new job.

To me leaving work because of injury, accident, heart attack, stroke, dementia, cancer, a host of other work ending events, damages or conditions this is not really early retirement it is convalescence and recovery.

To me the statement "How to retire early" has to be expanded or changed into something like early retirement lifestyle changes or something like early retirement leisure and income activities.

We have lots of time to explore the early retirement concepts and procedures.

Come back often.

Learn English Laughing

Learn English Laughing Blog will present comedy, humour, puns, riddles, jokes, examples, stories, shaggy-dog stories, explanations etc... etc...for international ESL English language students

Joke from Learn English laughing

The wife is driving her and her husband along a highway at 60 miles per hour.

The husband suddenly looks over at her and says, "Honey, I know we've been married for 20 years, but I want a divorce."

The wife says nothing but slowly pushes the speed up to 70 mph.

The husband continues: "I don't want you to try to talk me out of it, because I've been having an affair with your best friend, and she's a better lover than you are."

The wife remains quiet but speeds up to 75 mph as she gets angry.

The husband continues: "I want the house". Again the wife speeds up, to 80 mph.

The husband starts to press his luck: "I want the car, too." The wife still quiet just drives faster and faster. By now she's up to ninety mph.

Frustrated by the silence he says "All right, I want the bank accounts, and all the credit cards, too."

The wife slowly starts to veer toward a bridge.

This makes the husband a bit nervous, so he says, "Isn't there anything you want?"

The wife says, "No, I've got everything I need."

"Oh, really," he says, "so what have you got?"

Right before they slam into the bridge at a 100 mph, the wife smiles and says,

"The airbag"

Facing Autism in New Brunswick

About Facing Autism in New Brunswick

My interest in autism, and my engagement in autism advocacy, began with my son Conor's Autism Disorder diagnosis and the realization that, locally at least, no serious efforts were being made to improve the lives of persons with Autism or to address the realities of Autism Disorder.

Hugs are good, but hugs are not enough. Evidence based treatment, education and residential care by properly trained service providers are required to help the 1 in 150 persons who have an autism spectrum disorder.

Recent Post:

Fomer NIH Head Says Question of Whether Vaccines Cause Autism Has Not Been Answered

Dr. Bernadine Healy, former head of the US National Institutes of Health, has claimed in an interview with CBS News that the question of whether there is a causal connection between vaccines and autism has not yet been answered. There is not yet enough evidence to say that there is no causal connection.

Dr . Healy notes that there have been no major studies of autistic children who developed autistic symptoms shortly after vaccination to see if there is such a connection. Animal Lab tests on mice and primates showing concerns about mercury and vaccine preservatives have been disregarded. Population studies do not test causation the indicate associations. Controlled lab studies are required. Dr. Healy also indicates that an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report in 2004 discouraged investigation of a possible link between susceptibility groups, autism and vaccines. Dr. Healy claims that the IOM report expressed a concern that pursuing the vaccine autism hypothesis would scare the public.

"I think that the public health officials have been too quick to dismiss the hypothesis as irrational," Healy said.

Choosing Subjects for English Sentences
Before you write an English sentence you have to get organized.

The first stage of organization is choosing the single or complete thought that you are stating, describing, explaining or asking. The thought should include 1. a subject, and 2. an action or state of being.

Lets describe the different available subjects to be used in our example sentence.

You can use yourself as the subject of your sentence. You can use your brothers or sisters or any or all of your family members as the subject of your sentence. You can use neighbors, friends, people you know, even people you do not know as the subject of your sentence. In fact you can use anybody (living or dead) as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your pet dog or goldfish as the subject of your sentence. You can use any (living or dead) insect, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, bacteria or any creature as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your new toy, Sentence Master Game, computer software, hybrid car, house, office or space pen as the subject of your sentence. You can use any naturally constructed or man made items or objects as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use another person's new car, laptop computer, motorcycle or funny tie as the subject of your sentence. You can use any other person's naturally constructed or man made items or objects as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your pet dog's possessions as the subject of your sentence. You can use any (living or dead) insect, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, bacteria or any creature's possessions or objects as the subject of your sentence.

You may want to use your actions as your subject of your sentence. You can use swimming or running as subjects for your sentence. Almost all visible actions can be sentence subjects.

You may want to use another person's actions as the subject of your sentence. You can use their swimming or running as subjects for your sentence. Almost all visible actions performed by another can be sentence subjects.

You may want to use a natural process or an animal's or machines' actions as the subject of your sentence. Almost all visible actions performed by mother nature, all creatures and machines can be used as sentence subjects.

You may want to use invisible actions as your subject of your sentence. These invisible actions are also described as intangible actions. You can use your thinking or dreaming or wondering as intangible actions as subject of your sentence.

You may want to use another person's invisible or intangible actions as the subject of your sentence. You can use another person's daydreaming or fantasizing as intangible actions as subject of your sentence.

You may use your state of being as the subject of your sentence. The state of being is also considered an intangible item. You can use your feeling happy or sad as the intangible subject of your sentence.

You may also use another person's state of being as the subject of your sentence. You can use their feeling happy or sad as the intangible subject of your sentence.

You may want to use an un-real item or action or state of being as the subject or your sentence. You can use imaginary people, animals, objects, planets, actions, thoughts, and other intangibles as the subject of your sentence. In fact you can use imaginary characteristics of your imaginary friend's pet "axelyrty" as the subject of your sentence.

You may want to use a small amount of imagination and only use imaginary thoughts or feelings or actions to a real person, animal, object or machine.

As a writer of English sentences you have an extremely wide choice of available subjects. you can use English sentences to write about anything both real and unreal.

Introducing the Grammar Guy Blog

Introducing the Grammar Guy Blog

Richard Firsten writes the Grammar Guy blog for AzarGrammar.com. Richard makes grammar fun — which of course it is! He also answers grammar questions on the Grammar Q&A forum, along with Rachel Spack Koch. Richard teaches English to adults at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center, part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and has authored a number of grammar texts for teachers and students.

The initial posts: Thursday, January 17, 2008

Welcome to My Blog!

Glad you’ve come to visit my blog! I’d like to consider this my cyber-living room, so to speak, where we can have good chats to exchange ideas about any and all aspects of the English language: where it's been, where it is now, and where it's headed.

Some entries on the Grammar Guy Blog

May I Have a Word?

In his book Crazy English*, author Richard Lederer goes into some of the odder oddities of English. He pointed out something that has always stuck with me: “Why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway?” Yep, it’s funny, so we chuckle at the cleverness of his question and maybe grin sheepishly, but at the same time, I, for one, feel uncomfortable because I know I can’t answer the question right then and there. We’ll probably find the answer if we dig into the etymology of both words, but to come up with an answer on the spot? Yipes! Anyway, the point is that English vocabulary is always ambushing us like this. Hasn’t it done that to you?

TOEFL TOEIC IELTS Cambridge Test Information

TOEFL TOEIC IELTS Cambridge Test Information includes preparation, exam questions, quizes, essays, short answer, listening, speaking, conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar and writing composition.

RECENT POST

Paper-Based TOEFL Test

In areas where the iBT and CBT TOEFL are not available, a paper-based test (PBT) is given.

Toefl test takers cannot register at the testing center on the test date, they must register in advance using the registration form provided in the Suplemental Paper TOEFL Bulletin.

Students should register in advance of the given deadlines to ensure a place because the test centers have limited seating and may fill up early. Paper-based test (PBT)Toefl Tests are administered only a few times each year.

The PBT tests the same English skills as the CBT with some differences. The number of questions is higher in the PBT and the score scales.

The PBT Toefl test lasts 4 hours. Students can take the test as many times as they wish. However, colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent score.

Listening (30-40 minutes) It consists of three parts.

The first one contains 30 questions about short conversations.

The second part has 8 questions about longer conversations.

The last part asks 12 questions about lectures or talks.

Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes)

This part has 15 exercises of completing sentences correctly and 25 exercises of identifying errors.

Reading Comprehension (55 minutes)

It has 50 questions about reading passages.

Writing (30 minutes)

One essay with 250-300 words in average.

The final PBT score ranges between 310 and 677 and is based on three subscores:

Listening (31–68), Structure (31–68), and Reading (31–67).

Unlike the CBT, the score of the Writing section (referred to as the Test of Written English, TWE) is not part of the final score; instead, it is reported separately on a scale of 0–6.

The score test takers receive on the Listening, Structure and Reading parts of the TOEFL test is not the percentage of correct answers.

The score is converted to take into account the fact that some tests are more difficult than others. The converted scores correct these differences. Therefore, the converted score is a more accurate reflection of the ability than the correct answer score is.

To Compare the IBT, CBT and PBT Toefl scores go to the official ETS comparison chart:
http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/TOEFL/pdf/TOEFL_iBT_Score_Comparison_Tables.pdf
